Abstract: Focused principally on Les Cinq cents millions de la Bégum and La Chasse au météore, and referring in passing to Vingt mille lieues sous les mers and the novel Le Humbug, this article asks what the representation of states of matter in Jules Verne’s tales has to say about money and its circulation. The physics of money might be seen to privilege liquidity but is contradicted by the refusal to depreciate the value of marvels in the world of commerce.
