Argent et parabole « fin de siècle » La Religion de M. Pleur de Léon Bloy

  • Publication type: Article from a collective work
  • Collective work: La Littérature au prisme de l’économie. Argent et roman en France au xixe siècle
  • Author: Glaudes (Pierre)
  • Abstract: La Religion de M. Pleur is one of the tales by Bloy in which the symbolic value of money attains its maximum intensity. Wealth and poverty are not social realities which can be transformed by political action but are contrary modes of relating to the state of being, which will endure until the end of time. In this tale, the atonement of humanity is marked by uncertainty. Its theology of money does not originate in a religion seeking to appease the despair of the poor by soothing promises, but manifests instead a deep spiritual anxiety.
