Abstract: Studies of clandestine philosophical manuscripts have significantly contributed to renewing research into religious disbelief; they have also led to rethinking the question of how atheism is defined. The thematic dossier La Lettre clandestine explores the diverse approaches to this issue between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries.
