Abstract: Based on an examination of its clandestine sources and the history of its publication and the editorial censorship it was subject to, this article analyzes how the deism of “natural religion” in the Encyclopédie (Volumes I to VI) developed into a more evident epistemological atheism (Volumes VII to XVII, 1765–1772), notably in the case of articles by Diderot and d’Holbach.
