  • Abstract: In the Cymbalum mundi, Mercury, alias Jesus, is presented as a magician. It is in this guise that, in the third dialogue, he uses a mysterious spell to make a horse speak. However, this spell, when translated correctly, bears a strange resemblance to a refrain that is sometimes used during donkey festivals to make this equine animal sing.
