Abstract: The role of Secrétaire Perpétuel (Permanent Secretary) at the Académie royale des sciences offered Fontenelle a privileged position from which to disseminate his ideas on clandestine philosophy. This article analyzes the editorial and discursive strategies that transformed official scientific discourse into an effective forum for anti-religious thought and that created a new environment for the spread of Enlightenment thinking.
