Abstract: Although Montesquieu and Fontenelle were close, nothing is known of their meeting with one another, and Montesquieu only rarely cites the writings of his great elder. However, he frequently mentions conversations that reveal both the gap between their respective philosophical approaches and the deep kinship of two minds united by the common conviction that philosophy cannot dispense with belles-lettres.
