Abstract: Although they are authentic documents, letters are not necessarily truthful testimonies as they include an element of performativity, are constrained by the conventions of expression, or sometimes simply have ends which today’s readers cannot easily understand. Books of Italian letters from the Renaissance, like that of Luca Contile or the collection dedicated to Vitellozzo Vitelli, respond to strategies of communication which an historical analysis enables us to understand.
