Abstract: With his Secrettaire (1588), Gabriel Chappuys translates and sometimes adapts two epistolary famous works, Del Secretario by F. Sansovino and the Lettere de Tredici Huomini Illustri collected by D. Atanagi and T. Porcacchi, published in Venice some years before, in line with the needs of the French public. This article demonstrates how this project is situated in the history of French letter-writing and how it responds to the publishing market of the time.
