Les plus importants ouvrages historiques sur la Floride peuvent se diviser en deux grandes catégories : ceux qui disent la vérité et ceux qui perpétuent les mythes. Durant la plus grande part des deux cents ans passés, les faiseurs de mythes ont régné en maître, alors qu’un grand nombre de magnifiques études de ce qui s’y est réellement passé ont moisi dans les archives, ignorés des universitaires comme des auteurs de best-sellers. L’âge digital a donné une nouvelle chance à ces diseurs de vérité d’être entendus. La plupart des titres les plus obscurs, ici mentionnés, sont maintenant accessibles en ligne. Plusieurs d’entre eux sont des chefs d’œuvres aussi bien littéraires qu’historiques. Ils offrent une vraie information qui, pendant des générations, a été étouffée par l’apologie historique de publicitaires. Cela ne signifie pas que les ouvrages des suiveurs et des dissimulateurs doivent être ignorés. Ils fournissent un témoignage précis du besoin que chaque génération avait d’entendre que le passé était exactement ce qu’elle imaginait qu’il était, quand bien même les auteurs diraient aussi, parfois, des vérités qu’ils n’avaient jamais eu l’intention de dire.
