Abstract: Starting with what the Port-Royal authors do not consider as “moral proof” but as self-evident demonstration, this article examines their definition of moral certainty – persuasive, convincing, but not demonstrative – and their attempt to bridge the gap between these two kinds of “proof”. Pierre Bayle adopts their texts with ironic distanciation.
