Abstract: In his Philosophiae newtonianae Institutiones (1723), ’s Gravesande seeks to maintain both an empiricist methodology and Leibniz's principle of the conservation of kinetic energy (vis viva, or « living force »). This paradoxical ambition stimulates his epistemological inventivity, focusing particularly on the conceptualisation of self-evidence.
