Introduction

  • Publication type: Article from a collective work
  • Collective work: La Certitude morale de Descartes à Hume
  • Authors: Darveau-St-Pierre (Vincent), McKenna (Antony)
  • Abstract: The definition of moral certainty was crucial in the “classical age” of the 17th and 18th centuries – as was that of the self-evidence of intellectual intuition and of mathematical and metaphysical certainty. Moral certainty appeared to be subordinate, doubtful – in short, uncertain – until philosophers sought to bridge the gap between mathematical certainty and historical testimony by defining “degrees” of relative certainty necessary for everyday life.
