Abstract: The article “Certitude” of the Encyclopédie, signed by Diderot, embodies the state of the question of certainty in the mid-18th century, and reveals a lot about its role in Diderot’s works. This contribution focuses on the article to shed light on what remains of moral certainty in a work that strive to “change the common way of thinking”.
