Abstract: This article aims to analyze Houellebecq’s novels through Tocqueville’s sociological and René Girard’s psychological theories. It will consider how physical appearance plays an important role in his work. This theme will be examined alongside a consideration of how equality tends to increase competition and rivalry amongst the men in his novels.
