Abstract: This contribution looks at literary and historical approaches to the phenomenon of the fifteenth-century “library”. Starting by drawing a conceptual dichotomy between the “historical library” and the “imaginary library”, it then considers the characterisation of the medieval library from both an aesthetic and historical perspective in order to produce a nuanced account which lies at the crossroads between disciplines, and is far removed from our current historical pictures and literary representations.
