Abstract: The plan for a play devoted to the new Man is part of the European sociopolitical context of the interwar period, strongly marked by the exacerbating force of nationalism. Refusing the ideological confines that, in his opinion, any party entailed, Valéry conceived of the intellectual’s commitment in the form of a “slow antipolitics.” To be reborn, to rebuild, to redo: such are the terms of the mission of a Société des Esprits without which a League of Nations is inconceivable.
