Obviously the play project was an adventure that was personal as well as textual. Examining the leaflets alongside the Cahiers and the correspondence implicitly leads to an investigation of the private and/or event-based factors that influenced the scenography of this “tale” that is very much anchored in reality and whose evolving title is revelatory. The uncertainty surrounding possible answers adds to the interest aroused by this project and its abrupt abandonment.
Keywords: consummation/incompletion, order/disorder, politics/fantasy, power/love, public/private, genetic journey
222The aim to create a literary portrait, which animates many of Valéry’s works and projects, is perhaps the first and seminal impulse behind L’Isle sans nom. The powerful imprint of the form of the portrait, which the writer does not manage to inscribe in the unfolding of a story, would then explain to a large extent the rapid stagnation of this dramatic project.
Keywords: portrait, political power, dictator, History, pure Self, Genoa Crisis, Condillac
Unlike most of Valéry’s dramatic and narrative projects, the “tale for the stage” L’Isle sans nom does not stem from a poetics of fragmentation and incompleteness. This project is definitely consistent with closure and possible consummation. However, Valérian dramaturgy here plays on the tension between contradictory terms, and the paradoxes that feed it also end up strangling it.
Keywords: dramaturgy, consummation/incompletion, memory/amnesia, love/power, absolute, tabula rasa
The case of abandoned scripts only adds to the initial statutory deficit specific to any screenplay. If we admit that Valéry considered, among other solutions, to turn L’Isle 223sans nom into a script, we can then see in this project an exemplary case, incomplete as a text and unfinished as a work of cinema.
Keywords: cinema, screenplay, unfinished project, filmmaking, invisible cinema, potential work, amnesia
In L’Isle sans nom, the Self as an ultra-powerful dissolver discovers itself surrounded by a world of epithets and attributes.... This fragmented text is a sketch of an intellectual comedy of naming–or a grammar for the stage. These fragments also contain a satire of the ego of personality.
Keywords: self, attributes, principle of indeterminacy, theater, politics, naming, personal/impersonal
“The nameless Man” is part of a series of “conceptual characters” (Deleuze and Guattari) with which we must associate Descartes and Monsieur Teste. By depriving him of memory and thus of the “past variable,” Valéry increases his “possible variable.” It will therefore be necessary to study this game of possibilities, a combinatorial game 224of an “I without attributes,” which participates both in Valérian nominalism and a realism of relationships that take precedence over their terms.
Keywords: nominalism, naming/designation, essence/function, analysis situ, fiducia, combinatorics
The L’Isle sans nom project sees the development of a story about a “man” deprived of everything. Nobody, or rather, everybody is in power, since it presents the totality of possibilities. But how to preserve this total power? The drama will remain unfinished: how to imagine the communication between the actors while maintaining the fiction of a new Man, foreign to any convention? A new language or dramatic contract is waiting to be invented.
Keywords: the possible, a Whole / a Somebody, memory/oblivion, language, naming
A major leitmotiv in Valéry’s work, the concept of fiducia occupies a central place in the project for L’Isle sans nom. The possibility of staging the mechanisms behind a concept and its operation is a philosophical strategy dear to Valéry as attested by numerous passages in the Cahiers. Reflections on language, trust, credit, social order, and political power punctuate the texts in the dossier.
Key words: fiducia, confidence, credit, values, order/disorder, power
225Antonietta Sanna, « L’Isle sans nom, “antipolitique lente” sur scène ? »
The plan for a play devoted to the new Man is part of the European sociopolitical context of the interwar period, strongly marked by the exacerbating force of nationalism. Refusing the ideological confines that, in his opinion, any party entailed, Valéry conceived of the intellectual’s commitment in the form of a “slow antipolitics.” To be reborn, to rebuild, to redo: such are the terms of the mission of a Société des Esprits without which a League of Nations is inconceivable.
Keywords: new Man, Europe, intellectual, political/antipolitical, League of Nations, intellectual cooperation
A passionate reader of Ribot, a connoisseur of psychological literature of the nineteenth century, and of associationism in particular, Valéry, through the fiction of L’Isle sans nom, offers his reflections on the link between personal memory and impersonal memory. From the Valérian perspective, psychic life is marked by reflex action phenomena. The return of memory and the image of awakening can be read together in this project.
Keywords: tabula rasa, psychology, personal memory / impersonal memory, Théodule Ribot, law of regression
The “nameless man” gloriously brings his body into confrontation with empirical reality and the presence of the world in the reestablishment of intellectual power centered around the evidence provided by an “I am.” In fragments, in the margins, the body of the man and the fragmented writing of L’Isle sans nom are superimposed, and also play with the Valérian leitmotivs and the magic codes of tales and the Bible, thus revealing the poet’s ambitions to once again situate the body at the heart of his work.
Keywords: body, purity, insularity, legend, tale, present/past, Self
