Abstract: The legal history of the Middle Ages no longer opposes private law with public law or an idealised Roman law with the law of ‘barbarians’. Preserving its specificity through the mastery of vocabulary and the major legalistic concepts, the discipline employs anthropologic methods to study the privileged fields of sources and norms.
