Abstract: This article retraces the birth of the history of construction in Italy, emphasizing the relationships, or lack thereof, with other disciplinary fields. It recounts the lesson of Edoardo Benvenuto, his writings, the activities of the association that bears his name, and the international congresses. It highlights the specificity of this history in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries with the introduction of reinforced concrete, the role of engineers, and in short, the elements of a “material” history of building architecture.
