Abstract: Kertész’s, Sebald’s and Goux’s novels stage the process of interpretation and question the legitimacy of generating a meaning that exists only in the mind, for its comfort. But while they condemn it as a fiction, the authors reassert the ethical values of questioning, of refusing meaninglessness, that define interpretation.
