  • Abstract: In the wake of Góngora and dedicated to the Conde de Niebla, Pedro Espinosa’s Soledades and Retrato are better understood if their form of otium religiosum in an arcade retreat is read in keeping with this nobleman’s both hermitical and mundane life in Sanlúcar de Barrameda, after the example of his father Don Alonso Pérez de Guzmán who, before his death in 1615, gathered sevillian humanists in a spiritual circle with an eye to Virgil’s Arcadia and to that of Naples academy under Pontano.
