Abstract: The study deals with the first editions and collections of fabliaux, including the pioneering work of Barbazan, and shows how the rediscovery of these texts during the second half of the 18th century led to different approaches amongst scholars, ranging from faithful reproductions of manuscripts to free rewritings. The definition of the fabliaux appears to be more flexible than today but also clearly influenced by the materials available.
