Abstract: Philippe de Novare’s Mémoires, which appear exempt from documentary references, are in reality modelled on poetic genres like the dawn song or the sirventès. The versified insertions guarantee authenticity as, according to the author, they were created on the spot. The narration of facts gains it authority from its legal know-how, derived from originally oral documentary sources linked to the customary law of Cyprus and Jerusalem.
