Abstract: The Estoire is a historical document which should be treated with caution. It fuses the literal framework of facts with a reading shaped by literary codes in use since Antiquity. Through its dense layers of interpretations, it attests to a necessary collaboration between historians and literary scholars. The complementarity of the two disciplines is surely the best way of grasping medieval historicity in the creativity and polymorphy which condition its meaning
