Abstract: This opening introduces the special report devoted to Rabelaisian botany, which falls under the aegis of the character Rhizotome, the medicinal herb gatherer. After recalling the importance of plants in Rabelais’ life and fiction, this foreword provides a critical inventory and overview of the rich and varied contributions to this special report.
