  • Abstract: This article looks at the issues involved in comparing Gargantua with its first transposition into a foreign language, Johann Fischart’s Geschichtschrift (1575): the anthology offers a contribution to the history of the European reception of Rabelais’s work, a better evaluation of the German text as being “in the style of” Rabelais, an in vivo observation of a re-emerging practice of translation-transposition, and also a possible editorial protocol for “translations” of the sixteenth century.
