Abstract: The language of Rabelais is characterized by a singular syntax that exacerbates certain contemporary traits. The practice of subject postpositioning, and especially the hugely widespread omission of the subject, go against what can be identified at the same time as being the “order of nature” and could reveal the quest, in Rabelais, for a signifying language in each of its parts, at the same time as they enter into a play of stylistic variations throughout the work.
