Abstract: This study demonstrates Rabelais' interest in antiquities. This "reverence for antiques" runs through both his scholarly and narrative writing, as shown particularly by Gargantua's "Antidoted Bubbles," which should be understood in connection with the Lyon Tablet, discovered in 1528. This article reconstructs circumstances in which the editions Rabelais produced were guided by this taste for archaeology, including Marliani's Topographia antiquæ Romæ in 1534.
