Abstract: This study concerns the representation of the Amerindian in Caribbean stories (tales and novels) for young people. It looks at the plurality of the figure of the Amerindian, showing it to be nuanced, complex, and contradictory, especially because of the links that are woven between modernity and oral tradition. It questions the meaning of this representation in order to suggest that it plots out an ideal of collective and individual identity construction— under construction.
