Abstract: This book considers the novel À rebours by Huysmans from the perspective of the notion of the end. It sees in the departure of Des Esseintes toward a solitary retreat an act of ridding oneself of nature and society. This separation preludes the event that confronts man with the end, between sovereignty and downfall.
