Abstract: Freud came late to France, reception by NRF writers playing as pivotal a role as rare psychiatrists. Caught off balance by Freudian theory in 1921, André Gide recognized some of his own thinking, initiated French translations, inserted Freudian material into certain of his works, but remained sceptical.
