This paper retraces the fundamental changes in the teaching and learning of university French in Australia since 1970s and offers a critical, reflective discussion about two opposing pedagogical cultures characterized by analytic awareness of the foreign and speedy practices of familiarity.

This article reports a rhetorical genre-based analysis of a spoken classroom event and seeks to characterize the genre for pedagogical purposes. A case study approach allowed the authors to explore the pattern and variability in the teacher’s improvisational pedagogical style. We conclude by underlining the need for a concept of genre in applied linguistics.

Ross Chambers est professeur émérite de français et de littérature comparée à l’université du Michigan et spécialiste de la littérature française du xixe siècle. Il a publié Mélancolie et opposition : les débuts du modernisme en France (Paris, 1987) et il a été élu comme correspondant étranger de l’Oulipo pour l’Australie en 1961.

Ross Chambers is Emeritus Professor of French and Comparative Literature at the University of Michigan, and a specialist in nineteenth-century French literature. He has published Mélancolie et opposition: les débuts du modernisme en France (Paris, 1987) and was elected as the Oulipo foreign correspondent for Australia in 1961.

Cette étude analyse la révision radicale de l’œuvre de Charles Baudelaire Les Fleurs du Mal par l’auteur John Tranter, à la lumière des travaux de Roman Jakobson sur l’analyse structurelle du langage. Il montre comment l’appel et la réponse à l’intertexte de « L’invitation au voyage » créent une densification de chacun des deux textes.

The paper examines the intertextual call and response dynamic in John Tranter’s radical revision of Baudelaire’s “L’invitation au voyage” in Les Fleurs du Mal. Although a supplementing replication “contre Baudelaire”, Jakobson’s account of poetic function reveals Tranter’s densification of both texts.

Véronique Duché is Professor of French Language and Literature at the University of Melbourne. A specialist in the Renaissance novel, she is particularly interested in the history of translation. She has published Si du mont Pyrenée / N’eussent passé le haut fait…, les romans sentimentaux traduits de l’espagnol en France au xvie siècle (Paris, 2008).

Cet article s’intéresse à la traduction à la Renaissance. Il montre que l’oscillation du traduire entre proximité et distanciation ne se résout pas toujours en un dialogue, et que bien souvent la domestication l’emporte sur l’exotisme.

This article examines translation during the Renaissance. It demonstrates that the hesitation between distance and proximity does not always turn into a dialog, and that domestication wins over foreignization.

Peter Cowley est professeur en études françaises à l’université du Queensland. Spécialiste d’épistémologie de la traduction, il s’intéresse à la dispersion disciplinaire du concept de la traduction et au foisonnement de la figure du traducteur dans la fiction, le cinéma et l’autobiographie. Il est également le traducteur du philosophe Michel Serres.

Peter Cowley is professor of French Studies at the University of Queensland. A specialist in the epistemology of translation, he is interested in the disciplinary dispersion of the concept of translation and in the proliferation of the figure of the translator in fiction, cinema, and autobiography. He also translates the work of the philosopher Michel Serres.

Publiés bien des années plus tard, ses Carnets omettent pourtant cet épisode élaboré en fiction. Quelle tension cette lacune trahit-elle ?

Louis Guilloux was a writer-translator before interpreting for the Americans after Normandy. He recounts this episode in his novel “O.K., Joe!”, and in his diaries, yet in their published form the latter omit it entirely; an erasure which plays out certain tensions between translation and interpreting.

Titulaire d’un doctorat en littérature comparée de l’université de Melbourne, elle se spécialise dans la littérature postcoloniale francophone, et s’intéresse particulièrement aux écrivains français d’origine vietnamienne et à l’écriture de l’exil européen.

Alexandra Kurmann is Associate Lecturer in French and Francophone Studies at the University Macquarie in Sydney. With a doctorate in comparative literature from the University of Melbourne, she is a specialist in French postcolonial literature and is particularly interested in French writers of Vietnamese origin and the writing of European exile.

Cet article montre l’influence du roman épistolaire Malina d’Ingeborg Bachmann sur le récit Lettre morte de l’écrivain d’origine vietnamienne, Linda Lê. Il suggère que dans son roman postcolonial Linda Lê, répond à Ingeborg Bachmann, son précurseur littéraire, pour régler le problème de la féminité niée qu’évoque Malina dans le monde de l’après-guerre.

This paper argues that in composing Lettre morte, French-Vietnamese writer Linda Lê was influenced by the letter form in Ingeborg Bachmann’s novel Malina. In her own postcolonial text Lê writes back to Bachmann as a literary precursor in a bid to solve Malina’s post-war dilemma of female entrapment.

Tess Do est maître de conférence en études françaises à l’université de Melbourne. Spécialiste en études francophones et postcoloniales, elle s’intéresse particulièrement aux rapports entre exil et identité, guerre et mémoire, culture et alimentation dans les œuvres des écrivains français d’origine vietnamienne. Elle a participé à l’ouvrage New Perceptions of the Vietnam War (McFarland, 2015), dirigé par Nathalie Nguyen.

Tess Do is Lecturer in French Studies at the University of Melbourne. A specialist in Francophone Postcolonial Studies, her main research focuses on the relationships between exile and identity, war and memory, and food and culture in Vietnamese francophone literature. She has contributed to the work New Perceptions of the Vietnam War (McFarland, 2015), directed by Nathalie Nguyen.

This study investigates the genre confusion of Riz noir, caught in its ambivalent peritext and narrative voices between fiction and real-life experience.
