Michel Foucault, Herculine Barbin, and the Case Study Genre

  • Publication type: Article from a collective work
  • Collective work: Genre, Text and Language. Mélanges Anne Freadman
  • Author: Lang (Birgit)
  • Abstract: This article investigates how Michel Foucault engaged with the case study genre, taking Herculine Barbin dite Alexia B., published in 1978, as its focus. The close analysis of the case modalities presented reveals how he uses the innate characteristics of the genre to question rather than answer and disseminates his theories of sexuality.
