Abstract: In the nineteenth-century French lyric, travel takes an inward turn and gets re-inscribed in fi nely calibrated verbal formulas designed to express the anomie of a changing world. As a result, a new poetic diction anchored in domesticity ends up transcending geographic and cultural distances.
