Abstract: This essay suggests that Chapter 32 of Rabelais’ Pantagruel, possibly inspired by the world map of Oronce Fine, which appeared in a work that Rabelais had read, « introjects » the unknown, assimilates it, and fi nally recognizes what would be a first effect of globalization in the era of explorations.
