Abstract: In De Philologia, Guillaume Budé puts himself and Francis I on stage for what seems a simple plea in favor of literary culture. In fact, the dialogue is characterized by a courtly show of free-speaking, by a self-portrait, and by its attraction to the ideal past moment of the King’s promise.
