Abstract: This article explores the theoretical question of the rapport between fictional genre (« form ») – in this case, the Bildungsroman or novel of apprenticeship – and fiction(s) of gender, in this case, « masculinity ». Based on three paradigmatic examples of European novels of apprenticeship, Fielding’s Tom Jones (1749), Goethe’s Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre (1795-1796), and Balzac’s Le Père Goriot (1835), this article is a gendered re-reading of the theory of the bildungsroman genre.
