Abstract: Marivaux’s theatre was ignored in Japan for a long time. Between its introduction in 1898 and 1951, only The Game of Love and Chance was performed, in an adaptation, modified to suit the expectations of kabuki audiences. Still, no Japanese edition of the complete dramatic works has yet appeared. Since the end of the 1980s, translations have multiplied and some comedies have been staged regularly, thanks above all to the collaboration of an actress and director with some translators.
