Abstract: This study analyses the elements in Marivaux’s theatre that open to a metatheatrical reading, studying them in the context of the spectacular 18th century practice, with particular reference to the acting technique and the representation of the Comédie-Italienne in Paris. The presence of these elements has facilitated the scenic interpretation of many contemporary directors who have revolutionized the way of staging Marivaux’s theatre and have been able to show this author’s modernity.
