Abstract: The modern and contemporary French school has difficulty reconciling the different possible approaches to theater: as practices of the text, performance, the stage, a domain of knowledge, a history and particularly an aesthetic history, and a reservoir of heritage and the contemporary. Contradictions emerge from this resistance, not the least of which is the difficulty in addressing youth and engaging with youth. Schools have much to learn from the past about the relationship between theater and education.
