Abstract: This essay explores Hugo’s work in the contexts of the Romantic period in France, French theatre, and translation. It argues against the idea that translation is like a window, and discusses the loss of Hugo’s discoveries about Shakespeare’s theatrical construction, generic awareness, and his use of his earlier plays as sources throughout his career.
