Abstract: At a time when Shakespeare’s comedies were still little known across the Channel, and never staged, George Sand sought to acclimatise As You Like It to the French stage. Relying on the Romantic acting of Rouvière in the role of Jacques, a role she expands and makes more moralising, she adapts the play to the romantic wooded pasturelands of Berry, making it a more romantic comedy, and one that was far removed from Shakespeare’s original intentions. The production was no more than a critical success, but it did introduce audiences to a little-known work in the Shakespearean repertory.
