Clara Sadoun-Édouard did her PhD on the newspaper La Vie parisienne, Between Press, Mondanity and Literature (in press) and is currently working on Belgium fin-de-siècle (naturalism and decadence).

This article examines Claudine Lamour, a roman à clef between naturalism and decadence. It is based on Yvette Guilbert and was published in 1892 by Camille Lemonnier (1844-1913). The novelist uses the singer as the archetype of the fin-de-siecles actress: her body is associated with an erotic of violence and danger and it drives her to be, both idol and victim of the société du spectacle, at the time of its birth.

This article aims to analyse the spectacle of the female body in musical performance through a psychoanalytical lens. The protagonists of the novels above will be approached as actresses who use the stage to re-enact the passivity of their social condition in order to transgress it. Reading Freuds notion of compulsion repetition, it is argued that such performances create possibilities of variation and variety both on, and most importantly, off stage.

Corinne François-Denève did a PhD on actress novels in European literature between 1880 and 1916. She is Senior Lecturer at the University of Versailles Saint-Quentin. In the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century, the body of the actress became prominent. Female performers displayed themselves on stage all around Europe. Yet, this body as entertainment also gave rise to a body of texts. We look at some “novels on actresses”, written in French, English or German, to see how the body of the actress is dealt with.

Julien Botella is agrégé (French literature and language). His PhD in Theatre Studies is supervised by Arnaud Ryckner at the Institut de Recherches en Études Théâtrales, at the University of Sorbonne Nouvelle – Paris 3 and examines the concept of the diaphanous in modern and contemporary drama.

This study looks at the “serpentine dance”, the first dance performed by Loïe Fuller at the Folies-Bergère in November 1892. We assess and question from a technical, pragmatic and symbolic viewpoint the apparatus used by Fuller in the “serpentine” to understand the way in which the dancer was anchored in the socio-cultural field of the late nineteenth century.

Female dancers are performers whose profession does not aim at delivering lines or singing but staging their body through movement. It is the reason why the dancers image was for a long time associated with the prostitute. However, examining the way in which famous dancers such as Marie Taglioni, Loïe Fuller, Isadora Duncan, and Josephine Baker were described suggests that “the dancing woman” remained a stereotype of woman as seductress.

The most famous male impersonator at the turn of the century was Vesta Tilley. However, some of her predecessors and contemporaries have been much overlooked. Performers such as Hetty King, Millie Hylton and Bessie Bonehill aided in establishing the masher as a must see act for all patrons of the music hall. This article details and examines these performers and their acts to understand the appeal and influence they had on their audiences.

This article examines the misogyny, sadism, and fetishism of nineteenth-century magic. It further examines how, after a wave of feminist scholarship in the 1970s, scholars have been reluctant to confront magics essential anti-womanism head-on.

This article shows, through an examination of the historical voyage of Dietrichs stage performances launched in variety shows and cabarets how theatrical space and performance unfolded in the cinematic space and how the cabaret as a modern cultural site enables Dietrich to expand her space of performance cinematically by instrumentalizing the decayed aura of her own theatrical performance.

379

In naturalistic literature the eroticised beauty of actresses made of them models of elegance. High life fashion took hold of those whose duty was to display themselves. Advertising developed first in theatre revues, then in theatre programmes and actresses presented themselves as beauty advisors. With the increasing popularity of cinema in the early twentieth century and the establishment of international touring, Comédie-Française actresses remained, up until the 1960s, ambassadors for French haute couture.

Literature, theater, and early cinema are fascinated with the courtesan who not only seduced with her finery, she was seduced by finery, and was thus the ultimate consumer of high fashion. The appealing frisson of the “kept” woman is explored in four early films. The films use Édouard Manets famous, and scandalous, painting Olympia as an iconic mise en scène of the courtesan.

Reading Bernhardts 1907 autobiography Ma double vie in the context of a burgeoning celebrity culture in nineteenth-century France, it focuses in particular on the notion of cliché in order to examine the ways in which the discourse of celebrity sought to categorise Bernhardt.

This essay analyzes the 1891 suicide of Gaiety Girl Lydia Manton, who died in her luxury apartment after drinking a bottle of carbolic acid. Her death, and subsequent rumors about her liaisons with prominent men, including Prince Albert Victor, became fodder for newspapers. The press exposed the ugly underbelly of Victorian society, even as it continued to feed the publics appetite for young, chorus girl bodies.

On 22d July 1905, Julia Bartet (1854-1941), “doyenne” of the Comédie-Française troupe, was made Knight of the Légion dHonneur. The “Divine” was the first actress to be awarded such a distinction for her artistic activity. By assessing the debate surrounding this controversial nomination and by examining in particular the rivalry between Julia Bartet and Sarah Bernhardt (not awarded such honour until 1914), this article gives a better understanding of the actresses status in the days of the Belle Époque.
