Abstract: The article traces the introduction of photographic pictures in theatre magazines at the turn of the 20th century. An adaptation process that is far from linear and undisputed. The analysis of a selection of French magazines dated between 1840 and 1910 lets understand the different issues involved by photographic pictures: document, celebration, adornment, and social life.
