Abstract: An indisputable part of the mystery of Hérodiade can be traced back to the numerous strands which Mallarmé has woven together to make this character the unique figure that she is. The aim of this study is to reveal the different models which lie hidden beneath the cold young girl such as Phèdre, Hippolyte and even Christ which are brought together in a work which seeks to rethink the debate between Christian and pagan art.
