Abstract: Mallarmé’s presence is found everywhere in the evolution of modern music. His ideas encouraged our criticism of the “emotive” music of the Romantics. Modern composers like to remain invisible producing works where subjectivity is largely suppressed. In the middle of the 20th century people in the Western world are becoming more aware of uncertainty. Inspired by Mallarmé, Boulez has cultivated the notion of “controled chaos”.
