Abstract: On April 12, 1884 Renan gave his speech for the inauguration of the medallion commemorating three professors of the Collège de France, Michelet, Quinet and Mickiewicz. The article shows that this speech is both a manifestation of anticlericalism, a praise of science, and the affirmation of the religion of science.
