Abstract: Renan and Berthelot knew each other as students and always remained friends. They shared the hopes of "The Future of Science", which one worked on while devoting himself to philological sciences and the other to chemical sciences. They both had brilliant careers. Their exchanges reflect, in the shared scientific passion, the inflections of their personalities and the choices of their fields "sciences of nature" or "sciences of humanity".
