  • Abstract: Renan’s conference of Quimper (1885) is a debonair and ironic celebration of the Breton race, a race of travellers, spontaneously religious, idealistic without being fanatical and connoted by a spirit of moderation and sacrifice. From the “long dark rows of peasants and sailors” of Brittany, “a vast depth of unconsciousness”, finally rises the genius, Renan himself, for redeeming his entire race.
